Our boat and jet ski licence courses provide the necessary knowledge and practical skills required to operate a recreational vessel safely. The courses are conducted in a combination of online theory and face to face practical training in preparation for an individual practical assessment.

Boat (RMDL) and Jet Ski (PWC) Licence

From the 1st October 2020 a boat licence is gained through completing the following steps.

1. Completing the online theory course.

2. Completing a 40 question multiple choice theory assessment on the day of the practical training.

3. A Practical training session on our PWC to practice the required skills.

4. A Practical Assessment – This is completed individually on a separate occasion to the practical training session. You must successfully complete all tasks to be deemed competent.

Online theory, written assessment and practical training session. (Steps 1-3)

The online combined theory course for the RMDL (Boat) and PWC (Jet Ski)Licence is completed at your own pace though our structured online learning software. The course combines the training provided in the boat licence units with the added theory related to owning and riding a PWC. In QLD it is a requirement for PWC operators to hold both licences. Topics covered in the theory session include: Trip Planning, Navigation, Weather/Tides and Emergency Management along with PWC preparation, regulation and seamanship.

On completion of the theory course, a written assessment and practical session out on both the boat and PWC needs to be completed. The written assessment involves a 50 question multiple choice theory assessment (45mins to complete) for the boat and a 20 question exam for the PWC. Both require a 100% pass requirement.

The practical session involves practical training driving both vessels to complete a range of skills including:

Slow Manoeuvres

• Manoeuvring in forward and reverse.

• Maintaining speed and course, travelling in a straight line

• Executing turns to starboard and to port in a controlled manner

• Approaching a floating object

• Approaching a mooring buoy to the bow in a controlled manner

• Performing a man overboard drill in a controlled manner

• Performing a figure 8 at low speed

Manoeuvres at speed

• Smoothly accelerate onto the plane and bring the ship off the plane

• Maintaining speed and course travelling on the plane

• Performing and emergency stop from travelling on the plane

• Performing a figure 8 whilst at speed

Berthing and unberthing

• Taking the ship into berth and leaving a berth

General operation

• Understanding of steering control to perform tasks

• Ability to consider traffic conditions

• Ability to judge distance of 30/60 metres

• Judging 6 and 10 knots speeds

• Constant situational awareness of wind, tide, obstacles and others

The boat and PWC licence course are not a one size fits all course. Depending on previous experience, some licence candidates will require more time than others on the water training to become a competent skipper. Should you require further training after this session we are able to provide extra training to ensure you are competent in these skills. These training sessions should be used in the same way that new car driver would engage with a car driving instructor. Please contact us to organise training costs.

We encourage you to practice driving with another licenced skipper before arriving at a BoatSafe course - you may not be competent in driving either vessel in just one day.

Cost for online theory, written assessment and practical training session is $500. (Steps 1-3)

Practical Assessment (Step 4)

On successful completion of the written assessment and practical training, the practical assessment is the final component of the licence. This is done on a separate occasion to the practical training and is completed individually out on both the boat and jet ski. Students are required to demonstrate competence in all of the practiced skills to be deemed competent.

Cost for a practical assessment is $100 each for the boat and pwc.
